Nissan RB26DETT Engine
The Nissan RB26DETT is a 2.6L straight-6 four-stroke engine best known for being the power plant for Nissan’s premier sports car the Skyline. The “D” indicates a double overhead cam, the “E” stands for electronically fuel-injected, and the “TT” means the engine has twin turbochargers.

Originally, the R32 Skyline GT-R was planned to have a 2.4L RB24DET (single turbo) in order to compete in the 4000cc class of Group A. But when Nismo engineers added the AWD system to the R32 Skyline it made the car heavy and less competitive. At that point, Nissan made the decision to add twin turbochargers to the now 2.6L engine and compete in the 4500cc class. The resulting engine would be known as the RB26DETT that is popular today.
The first 2.6L RB26DETT engine featured in the Nissan R32 Skyline produced around 276HP (206 kW) @ 6800 rpm and 260 ft lbs (353 N·m) @ 4400 rpm. The last series of the RB26DETT present in the R34 Skyline produced 280 PS (206 kW) @ 6800 rpm but increased torque to 289 ft·lb (392 N·m) @ 4400 rpm.
Aftermarket performance companies like HKS and Tomei sell parts like variable cams and pulleys for the RB26 that increase its tuning and performance potential. With extreme modification, the RB26 engine is capable of horsepower in excess of 1 megawatt or 1,340 horsepower.
The RB26DETT engine can be found in the following cars:
- Nissan Skyline GT-R R32
- Nissan Skyline GT-R R33
- Nissan Skyline GT-R R34
- Nissan Stagea 260RS
- Tommy Kaira ZZ II

Doesn’t the RB26DETT belong in the R34 and the R32 has the RB20DET?
The earlier, less-expensive R32 Skyline GTS-t did have the RB20DET but it was replaced by the RB26DETT.
I love it! The RB26DETT is an engine of legondary proportions, right up there with one of the best and most popular 5.7L Chevy V8. The RB26DETT engine is even better if it is accompanied by the NISMO Straightcut gearbox transmition sitting under it! x
The R32, R33 and R34 all have the RB26DETT. The R32 has the RB20DET, too. The R33 has RB25DET too and the R34 has the RB25DET. All the Skylines come with non-turbo engines also. Some Skylines have auto boxes which I feel is a shame.
[…] an upgraded turbo core that changed from a sleeve bearing turbo to a ball bearing turbo setup, the RB26DETT engine is virtually unchanged from the R32 GT-R and still produces 276 horsepower […]
“The Nissan RB26DETT is a 2.0L to 3.0L straight-6″
Well thats not really accurate since the RB26DETT specifies the 2.6L displacement :). It should read the “Nissan RB series engines are 2.0L to 3.0L”
RB luvvvvv
Good call. RB26DETT is 2.6L. When I wrote that, I meant the RB engine family ranges from 2.0L to 3.0L. Thanks!
you are the one
The r32 gst-t is rb20 single turbo, the GTR has rb26-twin turbo.
How much is this gonna cost me ? (RB26DETT)
A used RB26DETT will cost about $3,500 USD plus shipping ($300-500). You can buy RB26 here: http://driftjapan.com/buy-cars/
I thought you all should read a book by Andy Butler SKYLINE GTR the ultimate japanese supercar. You can find the book on Amazon. And not to rub it in but I’m going to Japan for four years and drive my own 1993 gtr….SeeYa!
love this engine, the skyline gtr 32, 33, 34 were the only skylines with the rb26dett. the r32 gts came with the rb20de/t, r33 gts came with the rb25de/t and r34 neo rb25de/t. the /t meaning came with and without turbo.
in the process of building a rb30 bottom end with a rb26 head, going for single turbo also.
gotta love the hybrid setup ;)
how much for rb26dett and will it fit into a 200sx s14?
RB26 is about $3500 USD (plus ship) and yes it can fit.
im not sure if I wanna put the rb25det or the rb26dett in my 300zx…witch one would be easier to install
All RB26dett’s had a horsepower rating of more than what was written down. Nissan just told everyone it had 276/280hp so it was legal to be driven in Japan due to their enviromental standards. The RB26dett stock produces horsepower in the 320 range.
i wanna put a rb26dett into a 72 datsun 510 , would it fit?
will a RB26DETT fit in a 1990 240sx?
Yes, a RB26 can fit and you’re going to need a RB25 transmission to get rear wheel drive as the RB26 transmission is most likely AWD.
Question how much hp can a rb26 bottom end handle asuming it has a built head and bigger turbo and all??
I’ve seen about three RB26 engines featured in magazines rated at 1000 horse (745 Kw). If you look at the Skylines in D1 Grand Prix they are making around 580 hp (432 Kw).
Will it work in a 96 maxima? If it fits, I will have to go RWD correct?
I think it will fit, but I haven’t seen one before. Most RB26 engines come with an AWD transmission, but the RB25 transmission will bolt on and it’s rear wheel drive. RB26 engine with RB25 transmission is the most popular swap for drifting.
If I go ahead and swap the rb26 into my 91 240 hatch with a rb25 transmission will I have the same power, or maybe more due to the fact that I will only be spinning two wheels.
Power at the fly wheel will be the same. I’m not sure if the RB25 transmission will put more horsepower to the ground verses the AWD transmission.
I’m thinking of buying a 1995-1998 240 sx and was wondering if the rumors I heard were true. Can you fit the rb26dett under the hood of a 240. If anyone knows the answer please let me know. Thanks!
Yeah bro, you can fit a RB26 under the hood of a 240SX. There are many examples of this engine swap.
What do u guys think about a RB26DETT engine in a 1994 BMW 325 E36??? im just about to buy the engine.
hey guys, i was thinkn of putn the rb26dett into my s15. am only sittn on a spec s at the mo but i was wndrn how much it wud cost to get engine fittd and all, wit intercooler pipes, wiring loom, ecu, and the rb25 transmission, wud it pay me to put d engine or just sell d car and invest in a r34? cause im too young to get insured on a r34.
I would keep the SR20 in your S15 and invest in a nice turbo kit to boost power instead of going w/ a totally different engine/transmission.
thanks, but wouldnt i have to change pistons n shit due to the extra power?
padraig, Nah you won’t have to get high comp. pistons or cosmetic head gaskets.
depending on how much extra boost you will be running, I highly doubt it.
but Tom is definitely right about keeping that SR in there.
if my 240 came with an SR I would never swap it out…
hope this helps.
thanks guys, but wheres the best place to get the turbo kit? because iv looked around places and the kit is working out more dan actualy swaping the engine. does any1 know where i could get a decent but fairly cheep bolt on kit?
Questions: Which turbos are fitted in the rb26dett? Are they the same or different turbos? I only could find that the rb26dett uses a T28 turbo and is the other one a T28 or an other turbo? What are or where can I find the dimensions of those turbo’s? Thanks
I have a 2005 Nissan Altima (2.5L), and my dream is to stick a BR26DETT in it. I know that I would need an RB25DET tranny and that it’d have to be converted to RWD, but I was wondering how much it would cost? how much work would I need to do this?
If anyone can let me know, thanks. :]
the best would be HKS. i wouldn’t go cheap on anything on a RB26DETT
